How Much Does Google Ads Cost for a Small Business in Canada? (2026)

You set the budget, Google's auction sets the price per click. Here's how it works, what we see on real Canadian accounts, and how to plan your first month.

Google Ads has no fixed price. You choose a daily budget, and you pay each time someone clicks your ad. What a click costs depends on how many other businesses want the same search. For the Canadian small businesses we work with, a realistic starting budget is about $500 a month in ad spend for a local business, $1,000 for an established business and $1,500 for a brand new one, with clicks costing anywhere from under $0.25 (product ads for an online store) to about $1 to $1.40 (a local service search) on our accounts.

Below: how Google sets the price, what drives it up, real ranges from our accounts, and a simple way to work out your own budget.

How Google Ads pricing works

Google runs an auction every time someone searches. For each search, it decides which ads to show and in what order using Ad Rank, which combines:

  • Your maximum bid: what you’re willing to pay for a click (or what Google’s automated bidding sets for you).
  • Quality: how relevant your ad and landing page are to the search, and how likely people are to click. Google shows this as a Quality Score from 1 to 10 for each keyword.
  • Context: the person’s location, device, time of day and the other ads competing.

The useful part: a better ad and a better landing page lower what you pay. A business with a relevant, fast page can rank above a competitor who bids more.

You pay only when someone clicks (for Search ads). Google bills you monthly or when you reach a billing threshold, depending on your settings.

What actually drives the cost of a click

Your industry and the value of a customer. Searches where one customer is worth thousands of dollars (lawyers, renovations, insurance) cost much more per click than searches for a $30 product. Advertisers bid what a customer is worth to them.

Your location. A click in downtown Montreal often costs more than the same search in a smaller town, because more businesses are competing for it.

The keywords you choose. Broad terms like “shoes” are expensive and vague. Specific ones like “waterproof winter boots women Montreal” cost less and bring buyers who know what they want.

Google vs Meta. If you’re comparing channels, we break down what Facebook and Instagram ads cost in Canada the same way.

The type of campaign. Search ads (text ads on Google results) are priced per click on keywords. Shopping and Performance Max campaigns show your products across Google and are priced differently. We explain when to use each in PMax vs Search vs Shopping.

The season. Retail clicks get more expensive from November to December as competition peaks.

What we see on real Canadian accounts

From our accounts

A local tattoo studio (April to September 2026, about $1,265 in total, $150 to $360 a month):

  • Search ads: $1.09 per click on average, and about $45 per call or form fill.
  • Local Performance Max (ads on Maps, Search and YouTube around the studio): $0.25 per click, and about $16 per call or form fill.
  • Across both: 64 calls and form fills, about $20 each. Google also reported 575 “direction requests” as conversions. We don’t count those as leads.

One of our clients, an online store based in Quebec (October 2025 to September 2026):

  • $1,900 to $7,300 a month on Google Ads, mostly Performance Max, at about $0.19 per click.
  • Google reports a return of about 16x on Performance Max. The store’s own analytics credit Google Ads with about 8x. The truth is somewhere in between, and we plan budgets on the lower number.
  • Searches for the store’s own name cost $0.03 a click. They look amazing in reports, but most of those buyers were coming anyway.

Use these as a starting point, not a quote. For your own estimate, Google’s free Keyword Planner (inside Google Ads, under Tools) shows the price range advertisers pay for specific keywords in your area.

How to set your first Google Ads budget

Work backwards from the number of customers you want.

1. How many leads or sales do you want per month? Say 20 new leads.

2. What share of visitors will contact you? A good service page often converts somewhere around a few percent of visitors into leads. Let’s use 5% for the example.

3. How many clicks do you need? 20 leads ÷ 5% = 400 clicks.

4. What does a click cost in your industry? Check Keyword Planner. Say $3.

5. Your budget: 400 clicks × $3 = $1,200 a month, or about $40 a day.

These are example numbers to show the method, not benchmarks for your industry.

Then check the result against what a customer is worth. If 20 leads turn into 5 clients worth $1,000 each, $1,200 in ads is a good deal. If they turn into one $200 sale, the problem isn’t the budget, it’s the offer, the page or the keywords.

Brand new business? Google Ads can work from day one, but it’s the expensive way to learn what your customers search for. If you’re just starting, we usually advise putting the first months into local SEO and a complete Google Business Profile, then adding ads once you know which services and searches bring paying customers.

Small budgets: what works and what doesn’t

What works on a small budget:

  • A tight list of high-intent keywords (“emergency plumber Laval”, not “plumbing”).
  • Your service area only, not the whole province.
  • A strong list of negative keywords, so you don’t pay for searches like “plumber jobs” or “free”.
  • Ads that send people to the matching service page, not your homepage.
  • Conversion tracking from day one (form fills, calls, purchases), so you know what’s working.

What doesn’t:

  • Spreading $500 across ten campaigns. Each one gets too few clicks to learn anything.
  • Broad keywords with no negatives.
  • Turning campaigns on and off every few days.

Google can spend up to twice your daily budget on a busy day, but over a month it won’t charge more than your daily budget times the average number of days in a month (about 30.4). So a $40 daily budget means you’ll pay at most about $1,216 for the month.

Ad spend vs management fees

Your Google Ads budget is paid to Google. If you hire someone to run the campaigns, that’s a separate cost.

At Nexa, ad management starts at $899 a month, with a 3-month minimum, and the Google Ads account stays in your name. We explain the common pricing models (flat fee, percentage of spend, project) in our agency pricing guide, so you can compare quotes fairly.

Frequently asked questions

Is $10 a day enough for Google Ads?

For a local business with a few specific, low-competition keywords, $10 a day ($300 a month) can bring some leads. For competitive industries or online stores, it’s usually too little for Google’s automated bidding to learn. Start with the method above and see what your numbers need.

Is Google Ads free?

Creating an account is free, and you only pay when someone clicks your Search ad. Google sometimes offers ad credit to new advertisers who spend a minimum amount, so check for a current offer when you sign up.

How much does Google Ads cost per month for an online store?

It depends on your margins and how many products you sell. Shopping and Performance Max campaigns need enough budget to collect sales data, so we usually plan in terms of a target return on ad spend (ROAS) rather than a fixed amount. As a starting point, we recommend about $1,000 a month for an established store and $1,500 for a brand new one, because a new store has no sales history for Google to learn from.

What are the most common Google Ads mistakes?

Sending ads to the homepage, using broad keywords without negatives, not tracking conversions, and letting Google’s “recommendations” add budget or keywords without checking them.

How long before Google Ads works?

Clicks start the day your ads are approved. Results usually settle after 4 to 8 weeks, once you have enough data to cut what doesn’t work and push what does.
